Tourist programs

In the Iron Gates Natural Park area, one can conduct tourist programs that take advantage of the natural resources of biodiversity and landscape in this area of the country.

Tourist programs can last one day or several days, the latter being limited in the number of tourists by the accommodation infrastructure (groups of max. 20 people).

We will present you some variants of tourist programs that can take place inside the Iron Gates Natural Park, with the guide services provided by this park administration staff.

ONE DAY PROGRAMS

PROGRAM 1.  Car and nautical tourist itinerary

Group taking-over

The program begins with a visit to the Museum of the Iron Gates Region, located in Drobeta Turnu Severin, organized across multiple sections (history-archaeology, natural sciences, aquarium, folk art and ethnography). In this section you can visit the ruins of the Roman fort “Drobeta”, which is the first stone building erected by the Romans on the Dacian territory, defending the first Roman bridge over the Danube, its ruins (2 feet) being currently visible. Visiting these objectives can be achieved in about 2 hours.

The route is continued on the European Road E 70 that accompanies the Danube bank, through the gorge carved by the River in the Carpathian bow, which is one of the most spectacular natural phenomena in Europe, its tourist value being given also by the beauty and variety of the landscape.

After ca. 12 km, at the exit from Gura Vaii, you may visit the “Iron Gate” Hydropower and Navigation Complex, which is the largest construction of its kind in Romania and an elegant monument of contemporary technique. The ensemble between the Romanian and Serbian banks of the Danube, made up of the overflow dam, and control blocks for hydroelectric power plants, is impressive in size. The Complex features a museum that can be visited, which is structured in geology, archeology and ethnography departments.

The route continues up to Vodita Monastery, deviating with ca. 1,0 km from E 70. Here you can visit the ruins of the oldest monastic settlements in Wallachia founded by the vaivode Vladislau Vlaicu (one of the first Basarabs) at the call of the monk Nicodemus, in 1372. In addition, you can visit the current monastery, built in 1990.

Continuing on DN 70 and deviating about 4 km, the route can provide the visiting of one of the most interesting fossiliferous points in the country, Bahna Paleontological Reservation – of great scientific value.

The route follows the Danube Gorge further up in the town of Orsova. At the local restaurants in the town (2 or 3 stars) you may serve meals.

Subsequently, the town of Orsova may be a tourist attraction, by visiting several objectives such as: the Roman Catholic Cathedral (unique in Romania by its architectonic style).

Close to the city, you can visit the St. Ana Monastery, founded by Pamfil Seicaru, a well-known inter-war journalist. Pamfil Seicaru Memorial Museum is also here.

From the city of Orsova, the tourist program can be conducted in two variants:

By car:

Group taking-over

Leaving the city of Orsova, the route follows DN 57, visiting the Ethnographic Museum in Eselnita (where you can see both the ethnographic collection and the collection of icons and religious books from the 15th – 19th centuries), as well as the Centre of Captivity Growth of the Hermann’s Tortoise. It has been established by external financing projects, by the University of Bucharest, being an interesting scientific objective.

At the entrance to Mraconia Bay, you can see “Decebal’s face”, a bas-relief carved into a natural limestone monolithic column, being the biggest work of its kind in Romania (40 m high and 25 m wide).

You can also visit the Mraconia Monastery, based upon a former point of river navigation routing.

The route continues through the Danube Cauldrons, the most exciting and impressive section of the Danube Gorge, which is a mixed natural reservation. Its landscape value emerges both from a wide diversity of karst landform, with steep slopes, and the variety of plant species and habitats of European importance provides this objective with scientific importance.

Return to the city of Orsova. Meals can be served on the route at the pensions located along the Danube or at local restaurants in town (2 or 3 stars).

Visiting these objectives can be achieved in one day. Necessary equipment: boots, in the case of circulation on the Ciucaru Mare plateau.

Version with passenger ships:

One can embark on river passenger ships such as DIERNA, DANUBIUS and FLAMINGO, made available by traders in the city of Orsova, for visiting the Danube Cauldrons, the most exciting and impressive sector of the Danube Gorge.

From the ship, one can see the memorial plaque “Tabula Traiana”, located on the Serbian bank, with historical and cultural importance, a UNESCO monument, Roman inscription that glorifies the works for the construction of the military road along the Danube.

One can admire also the “Decebal’s face”, a bas-relief carved into a natural limestone monolithic column, being the biggest work of its kind in Romania (40 m high and 25 m wide).

The program ends with the return of the tourists in the place of departure (city of Dr. Tr. Severin, Orsova).

The distance traveled in this route is about 120 km (round trip), from Drobeta Turnu Severin, and 60 km round trip from Orsova. The trip can be also made with buses provided by local economic operators.
